WordPress is the most widely used content management system in the world. Roughly one in three websites worldwide runs on the excellent WordPress platform.
A good website without knowing how to code.
Many WordPress websites, past and present, suffer from slow loading and browsing. Critics claim that a WordPress site will never run as fast as a conventional website. That is not true, though. The right mix of plugins can speed up an entire WP website considerably.
Why you need a fast website on WordPress
Before I start doing something, it helps to be clear about why I am doing it. A fast website is no longer just about user experience, although that still plays a clear role. If you land on a site where everything takes ages to load, you leave. Not only do you lose visitors, you also drop in Google’s rankings. And who today can afford to ignore organic search and the full-text search engines Google and Seznam (the Czech search engine)?
The best mix of plugins for website speed
Some plugins work well together, some do the same job twice and some even conflict with each other.
One of the first things you can set up in a minute, and which runs without problems, is a caching plugin.
W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache
The most widely used include W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache. Both plugins have passed one million activations with good ratings, so you are not taking much of a risk. They need little configuration, and if you do not want to spend much time on them, you simply activate caching.
Autoptimize
The most widely used plugin for minifying CSS, JS and HTML in WordPress. Autoptimize compresses, minifies and caches all scripts and styles, and it also minifies HTML code. Minification reduces file size by removing things such as comments and unnecessary spaces.
WP Super Minify can be a good alternative here.
WP Performance Score Booster
Another very popular plugin that completes this basic trio. Activating it should increase page loading speed, as it enables GZIP compression and makes better use of the web browser cache.
I want an even faster WordPress
An even faster WordPress requires some investment. In general, the best results for speeding up WordPress come from the WP Rocket plugin, which handles all the main speed functions excellently! Its price starts at 950 CZK (about 44 USD).
Optimising media and images for speed and efficiency
Many WordPress users and website administrators upload images any old how. Download, upload and move on. That is a great shame, and it pays to give images more attention.
Try the WP Smush.it plugin
If a post image is 1 MB, something is wrong! Smush.it can save space on an already large WordPress website, and you can optimise images as you upload them. With this plugin, you will find the balance between performance and visual appeal.
While we are on the subject of images, many WordPress users upload images that are not only extremely large but also in proportions unsuited to their theme. The result is poor display.
And one more tip on media and images. In WordPress, you can fill in the name, caption, ALT text and description. If you fill in everything, you give yourself the best chance of success. If you are short of time, fill in at least the name and ALT.
The ALT text should describe the image and also contain the page’s keywords.
If you want to make money online with WordPress, you also need to think about speed.
How a WordPress speed optimization plugin works
A speed plugin does not make your server faster. It reduces the work the server and the browser have to do each time someone opens a page. Most plugins combine several of these techniques.
- Page caching stores a ready-made HTML copy of a page, so WordPress does not have to build it from the database on every visit.
- Minification and combining shrink CSS, JavaScript and HTML files and can merge them, so the browser downloads less.
- Compression sends files from the server in a smaller packed form, which the browser then unpacks.
- Browser caching tells returning visitors’ browsers to keep files such as logos and stylesheets instead of downloading them again.
- Lazy loading delays images and videos further down the page until the visitor scrolls to them.
- Deferring scripts loads non-essential JavaScript after the main content, so the page appears sooner.
An all-in-one plugin handles most of these tasks in one place. A combination of smaller plugins, like the one described above, splits the jobs between several tools. Both approaches can work, as long as each task is handled by only one plugin.
How to choose a plugin to speed up WordPress
The best WordPress plugin to speed up your website is the one that fits your hosting, your theme and your skills. These steps help you choose and set it up safely.
- Measure first. Test a few key pages, such as the home page, a blog post and a product page, with a page speed testing tool and note the results.
- Check your hosting. Some hosts provide server-level caching and recommend or block certain plugins. Read their documentation before you install anything.
- Pick one main caching plugin. Decide whether you want a free tool you configure yourself or a paid all-in-one plugin with simpler settings.
- Change one setting at a time. After each change, clear the cache and check the page on desktop and mobile.
- Use a staging copy if you can. Many hosts let you clone your site, so a broken layout never reaches your visitors.
- Measure again. Compare the new results with your first test to see what actually helped.
Also check that the plugin is updated regularly and that it is compatible with your version of WordPress and your theme.
Common mistakes with WordPress speed plugins
- Running two caching plugins at once. They overwrite each other’s rules and can show visitors outdated or broken pages.
- Switching on every option. Combining or delaying JavaScript can break menus, sliders, forms or the shopping cart. Turn options on gradually.
- Caching dynamic pages. Cart, checkout and account pages should usually be excluded from caching, otherwise visitors may see outdated or wrong content.
- Forgetting to clear the cache. Changes to your theme or content may not appear until you empty the cache.
- Expecting a plugin to fix everything. A heavy theme, a page builder, dozens of plugins or slow hosting limit what any speed plugin can achieve.
Frequently asked questions about WordPress speed optimization plugins
What is the best WordPress speed plugin?
There is no single winner for every website. Free caching plugins combined with a minification tool work well for many blogs and small business sites, while a paid all-in-one plugin saves you time on configuration. Choose based on your hosting, your theme and how much time you want to spend on settings.
Can I use more than one plugin to speed up WordPress?
Yes, as long as each plugin does a different job. You can pair a caching plugin with an image optimisation plugin, for example. Avoid two plugins doing the same task, especially two caching plugins.
Does a WordPress page speed plugin replace good hosting?
No. A plugin reduces the work needed to deliver each page, but it cannot make a slow or overloaded server fast. If your pages are still slow with caching switched on, look at your hosting plan and your theme.
Can a WordPress site speed optimization plugin break my website?
It can, mostly through aggressive JavaScript and CSS settings. If something stops working, turn off the last option you changed and clear the cache. A backup or a staging copy lets you test changes safely.
